Being born and raised on the outskirts of Chicago, I was not the typical Chicago city kid. Every chance my family had, we would escape the hectic city life and retreat to the woods of Wisconsin to boat, fish and enjoying the outdoors. My father was 50 years senior to me, so we were limited in the activities that we could share together. One of our passions was fishing. Every opportunity we had, my father and I would head off to the lake and spend a few hours fishing for crappie, perch, bass and northern pike. During my childhood, I both developed an appreciation for the gifts that Mother Nature gave us. As my hair gets a little grayer, I look back at a lifetime of traveling the world and always finding time to appreciate the woods, water and nature that we are blessed with.
In 1992, I was introduced to the interesting hobby of decoy collecting. Not knowing much about decoys or other sporting collectables, I embarked on what has been a 20 plus year adventure of learning. I started by attending many of the local shows (Minnesota, Oshkosh, Milwaukee, Midwest, and Ohio) and actually started a collection of decoy books well prior to even purchasing my first decoy. During my initial years of learning, I had the privilege of meeting many of the finest collectors and carvers from across the country. I never met anyone unwilling to share their knowledge or offer some constructive advice. After two years of waiting and learning, I purchased my first two decoys on January 8, 1994 at a local antique shop in Lemont, Illinois. Since that first purchase, I have continued to refine my collecting interests and have added numerous fine examples of hunting and sporting collectable to my collection. Over the past 20 years I have enjoyed sharing stories, meeting new friends, gatherings with old friends, sharing information, and always learning something new. I am not sure if I will ever grow tired of collecting duck decoys, gunpowder tins, lanterns, bobbers, calls, and other sporting collectables, but if I do, I will never grow tired of the friendships I developed along my journey. I hope you enjoy my website and look forward to the possibility of meeting you at one of the shows. Good collecting – Andy Schoneich
